Volvo Cars has announced that its next generation flagship vehicle will utilise Luminar Technologies LiDAR Technology making Volvo the first major vehicle manufacturer to integrate this technology in their vehicles as a standard piece of equipment.

LiDAR Technology Concept

You may be asking what LiDAR is? Luminar technologies, a tech start-up company, have developed a system of advances sensors that allows the vehicle to see the environment better. This is another step forward in safety technology where Volvo will be leading the pack.

To get into more detail, LiDAR stands for light detection and ranging systems. This incredible technology will allow the vehicle to create higher quality images of its surroundings assisting it in avoiding obstacles. The first Volvo to sport this technology will be the successor to Volvo’s current flagship the XC90 which is set to be revealed in 2022.

Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson had the following to say in a press release: “Volvo Cars is and always has been a leader in safety. It will now define the next level of car safety. By having this hardware as standard, we can continuously improve safety features over the air and introduce advanced autonomous drive systems, reinforcing our leadership in safety.”

Volvo quietly adds the XC40 T4 to its product line up

The Volvo XC40 has been a favourite amongst consumers looking for a small luxury SUV. Upon launch, the XC40’s entry-level trim was the T3 Momentum and the highest trim you could get was the T5 Inscription. Volvo has slotted another trim level in between those two with the addition of the XC40 T4.

Volvo XC40 T4

The Volvo XC40 is available in all the same trim level as the T3, D4 and T5. You will be able to get a T4 Momentum which is the entry-level, a T4 R-Design and the top of the range T4 Inscription. The XC40 T4 still comes standard with the 5 year/100 000 km warranty, maintenance plan and roadside assistance.

The T4 starts from R654 580 and you have the option to add different packs to whichever trim level you pick. The packs available on the T4 are the Power seat pack, Light pack, Driver assist pack, Climate pack, Lounge pack, Tech pack 2 and Car protection pack.

Finally, the XC40 comes standard with all the same advanced safety technology all-new Volvo come with namely the Pilot assist, Runoff rod protection, Lane Keeping Aid, Collision Mitigation Support, Hill Descent Control and depending on which pack you take the 360-degree camera which gives drivers a birds-eye-view of their surroundings.

The Managing Director of Volvo Cars South Africa has been quoted saying: “The XC40 range had a good 2020; it had an 8.4% share of its segment in 2019; that grew to 14.7% last year.”
