The recently unveiled Volvo EX30 SUV is coming to South Africa and will be available at CMH Volvo Cars Silver Lakes.
The EX30 will arrive early in 2024, with the five-strong local range set to start at just R775 900, making it R300,000 cheaper than the brand’s previous entry-level EV – the XC40 P6 Recharge. Pre-orders opened at CMH Volvo Cars Silver Lakes on Thursday, 8 June 2023.
This full-EV model, positioned as the smallest SUV in Volvo’s line-up, offers a city- and budget-friendlier option for environmentally-conscious consumers – and those who want to save money by not having to fill up with fuel.
The design features a closed shield grille, digitally rendered Thor’s Hammer headlights, split taillights and a familiar dashboard layout that will appeal to a younger audience. The EX30 also boasts an ascending waistline, creating the illusion of a “floating roof”, and muscular wheel arches that add to its distinctive appearance.
Connectivity is possible thanks to state-of-the-art features, such as a 12.3-inch high-resolution central display (running the latest Android-powered infotainment system), a digital key, over-the-air update functionality and a first-of-its-kind audio-system soundbar.
The small SUV has a high seating position most Volvo drivers prefer and space for five adult occupants. Volvo says the new EX30 rides on the Swedish luxury firm’s purpose-built modular, sustainable electric architecture and measures 4.23 metres long, 1.83 metres wide and 1.55 metres tall, with a wheelbase of 2.65m.
That means the SUV is 192mm shorter from nose to tail than the XC40 and offers new collision-avoidance technology, the latest driver-understanding system, and various safety innovations.
Volvo says both single-motor and twin-motor derivatives of the EX30 will be available in South Africa. Meanwhile, battery choices will include high-voltage 51kWh and 69kWh units on three trim levels (Core, Plus and Ultra).
The single-motor option produces 200kW and 343Nm, when combined with a 51kWh battery, allowing the crossover to reach 100km/h in 5.7 seconds and drive for a maximum of 344km.
Alternatively, buyers can opt for an extended-range model with a larger 69kWh cell, which decreases the acceleration time by 0.4 seconds and increases the driving range to 480km.
The more powerful twin motor arrangement then gives the Volvo access to 315kW and 543Nm, letting it sprint to 100km/h in an absurd 3.6 seconds.
